Welcome to Year 1.

A whirlwind is the only way to explain the first three weeks of school.

Who can ever believe their baby has grown another year older and is now playing in the "big kids" playground or doesn't necessarily need to be walked to and from the classroom?

In the past three weeks I have learnt a lot about me as a Mum too! I have learnt that homework is another layer in our already very busy lives that needs to be managed, or it just won't get done due to time constraints, and that it will cause me more stress than it will Cas, or his teacher, if it doesn't get done.

I have also learnt that as Cas grows I am struggling to keep up with a varied and reasonably healthy lunchbox. From this I have learnt that you can cook fish fingers and then fridge them for lunch the next day!

Read half of a blog post last night about all the kinds of Mums at the school gate. Why there is a need to label everyone I don't know. I just know that I have also learnt that real friends can be made at the school gate. Friends you can talk to, people who are at the same stage in life as you so you have lots to share, friends who will genuinely offer to help out with your child, and often do without any begrudging. Friends who you would help out at anytime if they needed.

Prep was fun and busy, and new. Year 1 is a time to set the pace for the next 11+ years of schooling.

Another Shopping / Pantry Tip

Whilst the shopping to a list and meal plan is the best way to save yourself money / time there is also another nifty tip that for me works well and go hand in hand with this process. I have certain grocery items that are just in the pantry - as I am sure we all do - sauce, dressing, mayo, plain crackers, pappadums, curry powder etc Rather than try and remember what you need each week / fortnight - attach a piece of paper to your fridge or your cupboard and when you run out of something whilst cooking write it down. Make the list a permanent fixture in your kitchen so this tiny tiny task also becomes a fixture.. you'll no longer have 3 bottles of tomato sauce and no BBQ. French dressing but not italian, curry powder but not mustard powder and all types of pasta instead of 5 packets of fettucine!!!

Never underestimate the power of cake.

  On Friday evening, I made cake.  I took a 70-cent packet mix, added about 50-cents worth of milk, maybe 10-cents worth of butter, and an egg, beat it to death, baked it and voila cake.  We iced it with another 5-cents of butter, a splash of milk and a cup of icing sugar and topped it with hundreds & thousands.  So, let’s call it a dollar fifty? $1.50. I made the cake for no reason other than it was Friday and everyone was a bit urgh. And I thought well, cake makes everyone happy!  When that cake was ready, we were taking advantage of the oven being on and pre-heated to cook dinner, which would take about 40 mins.  So ya know what, we ate cake before dinner.  Do you know what that does to a family? Things I Never Knew, the Pool install version

 These are the things I never knew, nor considered, when it came to building a pool.  - Earthing. Do you know what that is? I have a rough idea. Enough to know that I should have realised it would be required when you're putting a huge container of water in your backyard and surrounding it with a metal fence.  - Waterline tiles. They have a purpose. They keep the pool easier to clean, because dirty water leaves a scum line. Like in the bath. You know the bath ring? Guess who doesn't like waterline tiles and opted not to install them. The same person who will be scrubbing the side of the pool every second day so there's no dirty bath ring....which leads me to... - Outdoor pool shower. I want one, they look so neat outside. Never realised there was a purpose. But I feel those that opt for no waterline tiles should invest their funds into an outdoor shower.  - Grass cuttings. Mowers have catchers right.
